NASA’s Moon Atmosphere and Sediment Environments Detector (LADEE) has entered orbit around the moon and started a four-month mission to validate next-generation laser communications systems and answer questions about the thin moon’s atmosphere, according to the SPACEFLIGHT NOW website reported on October 6 Origin and nature of these long-standing problems. The LADEE spacecraft fired its liquid-fuel engine at 10.55 a.m. GMT on 6 October and was subsequently captured by gravity on the moon into the upper-altitude orbit above the equator. Although the federal government was partially closed, controllers at NASA’s Ames Research Center are still providing operational safeguards and monitoring of key maneuvers.
