I. INTRODUCTION Every major improvement in the flow through the turbine is essentially a change of flow pattern. We call that the flow patterns corresponding to several stages of development of the turbine through-flow design are: straight blade flow pattern, simple twist flow pattern, controlled meridional flow pattern, controllable swirl pattern and controlled curved flow pattern of the blade. The latter three flow patterns are the basic starting points of modern impeller aerodynamic design. Each of the three flow patterns has its own strengths and weaknesses. It is not satisfactory to use only one flow pattern for aerodynamic design. In order to improve the aerodynamic performance of a single flow pattern, the advantages and disadvantages of various flow patterns should be considered comprehensively and the total of three flow patterns
