Hou Zhuwu’s paintings hide the direction of the realization of contemporary art in ink painting. Understanding this is my own insight into the teaching of insight. For a long time I insisted: the meaning of Chinese painting in the image age has not much value. If a traditional Chinese painting expresses social reality, it can be expressed in other ways: If it is necessary to use ink directly, the main reason is just to directly follow some of the image elements of ancient Chinese painting and create it by means of a custom style. If the same social reality issues are canvassed and photographed, they may be expressed more adequately, while still implicitly continuing the Chinese aesthetic tradition. In this sense, the more obvious the style of imitating the ancient Chinese painting in expressing the artistic appeal of social reality, the less commendable it is.
