为了从历史的脉络上了解中国人的国民性格,我们按年代分层取样,将年代分为5组:古代(清以前)、30年代、50年代、80年代、90年代;另设三个比较组,即日本、俄国、美国。共随机选取长短篇小说作品295篇(部),人物共507人。其中中国208件作品,499人;日本24件作品,57人,俄国30件作品,70人:美国17件作品,63人。男471人,女226人。每件作品中,只要是主要人物,不论作者的态度,均予以选取,以避免样本成了理想人格的样本,尽量排除作者的成见。分析结果如下:
