Objective: To investigate the effect of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection on neonatal hearing and long-term efficacy of ganciclovir. METHODS: Transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) hearing screening was performed in 834 neonates with congenital CMV infection. One hundred and fourteen cases were divided into ganciclovir group and control group, and auditory evoked potential (ABR) hearing test was performed at 6 months. Results: Hearing screening rate of neonates with CMV infection was much lower than that of CMV negative patients. The incidence of hearing impairment at 6 months in ganciclovir-treated group was lower than that in control group. CONCLUSIONS: Congenital CMV infection can cause hearing loss in infants and young children. Early treatment with ganciclovir can reduce hearing loss to a certain extent.
