据上海古籍书店印行的黄濬著《花随人圣盦摭忆》一书记载,曹纕蘅所藏《闻尘偶记》抄本,是文廷式在光绪丙申(1896年)撰的未刊秘稿,其中多半是他的追记,内有不少珍贵的史料,尤其是涉及清宫秘史。1981年出版的《近代史资料》(一)丛耆,收有《闻尘偶记》,是据叶恭绰先生受文氏后人之托交来的原稿印行的。文廷式开卷即记寇连材上摺事,其一:“丙申二月十六日,上在颐和园。是日午刻诛太监一人于菜市。闻其罪坐私递封奏,语言悖谬云。后乃知太监名寇连才(材),昌平州人。其奏乃谏游行,请建储,停铁路,练乡兵,又勿听用李鸿章、张荫桓等,共十条云。”其二:“又闻寇连才(材)言事摺跪进于太后手,阅至半,震怒。是日内务府大臣、工部尚书怀塔布,以祭龙神路经颐和园,太后召见,承旨交刑部正法。怀塔布为连才(材)跪求稍宽,不允。故此事
