As early as the 1960s, Weston et al. Observed that the acoustic propagation in the shallow sea (BristolChannel in the United Kingdom) often experienced unusually large attenuation over a limited frequency range. The center frequency and attenuation of the anomalous attenuation varied with the seasons and the time of day and night.
