1964年5月,陳寅恪弟子蔣天樞(秉南)到廣州謁師。陳寅恪將自己一生事業托付給蔣天樞,全權授予蔣天樞處理自己著作出版事宜。并按古人送行贈言的傳統,鄭重地寫了一篇《廣州贈蔣秉南序》,夫人唐筼用工楷謄錄後作爲紀念品贈給蔣天樞。在這篇只有404字的文章中,陳寅恪簡潔地回顧自己的生平,闡述自己的學術追求,申明一生固守的志節操守,宣稱自己“默念平生,固未嘗侮食自矜,曲學阿世,似可告慰友朋”。言語間充滿自信,擲地有聲,成爲陳寅恪的一句名言。
