In this paper, a transversely adjustable restrained hot crack test method was used to study the effect of nickel on the susceptibility to weld metal solidification cracking in low carbon low alloy steels. The results show that with the increase of nickel content in the weld, the susceptibility of weld metal to solidification cracking increases. It is considered that the solidification crack is formed and extended along the low-melting film-like sulfide that is segregated at the columnar grain boundaries. Nickel can promote the segregation of sulfur. With the increase of the amount of nickel in the weld metal, the film-like low melting point sulfide that segregates in the columnar grain boundaries increases, resulting in the increased susceptibility to weld solidification cracking.
