Sandy: Well, don’t just 1)stare at it. Open it!
Daniel: OK, OK. Just give me a second. ①This letter is going to make or break me. OK, I’m ready… Dear Mister…blah blah blah…thank you for your…blah blah blah…we are pleased to inform you that you have been offered a place within our 2)institution!!!I’m in! I got in!
Sandy: Congratulations, son!
Daniel: I guess I’d better 3)pack my bags.
(A few weeks later)
Daniel: …and my new roommate is great. He’s from Scotland. I’m still getting used to his accent; I can’t understand a word he says. But he’s a really nice guy. ②Classes start tomorrow, so it’s time for me to knuckle down and screw my head on.
Sandy: Tomorrow? ③Well, they are certainly throwing you straight into it, aren’t they? You’ve only had a few days to get settled. But I suppose it’s best to get you started while your 4)adrenalin is still 5)pumping. The house is so quiet without you. Have you had a chance to have a
look around?
Daniel: Not really. We went to a museum yesterday and visited a few parks on the weekend. It’s so beautiful here. I can see how the artists get inspired. I can’t stop pulling out my notebook and 6)scribbling things down—whether I’m on a bus, or in a café, there are amazing images everywhere. I really love it, Mum.
Sandy: I can hear it in your voice that you do. I just worry I’m never going to see you again. Now you’ve seen what is out there, you won’t want to come back to our little corner of the globe.
Daniel: Don’t be silly. I know where home is…OK, I have to get going. Some friends and I are going for lunch. Tell Dad they sell pizza on every street corner.
Sandy: (turning away from the phone) Henry, Dan says they sell pizza on every corner…Your father said he’s 7)booking tickets as we speak.
Daniel: Haha. I hope you can come and visit one day. OK, gotta go. Love you.
