MUC1正常情况下主要表达于多种组织、器官中上皮细胞近管腔或腺腔面,呈顶端分布或极性分布,对正常的上皮起润滑和保护作用,同时还介导信号转导和细胞黏附。在肿瘤组织中MUC1的表达多出现量和质的改变,并与肿瘤的浸润、转移及预后相关。有研究表明它可作为肺癌细胞的分化标志,随着肺癌细胞分化表型趋于成熟,其表达逐渐下降。因此,MUC1可能成为一种非常有价值的肿瘤标志物,用于肺癌的临床诊断、治疗和预后的判断。
