The United States Air Force is very much interested in new laser-guided bombs and has awarded Texas Instruments the contract to continue the production of laser-guided bombs. Laser-guided bombs were tested at the Eglin AFB range. The trial involved the firing of 30 2000-pound bombs and 10 500-pound bombs. Experimental data show that these weapons fully meet the requirements. High-speed photography shows inertial 2000-pound laser-guided bombs approaching and impacting the target. Laser-guided bombs were fired at 4000 feet from an F-4C aircraft that dived at a speed of 550 nautical miles per hour at 15 degrees. On the ground, a laser mounted on a tripod, a mile outside of the photographic target, provides the weapon’s guidance system with reflected energy. Laser-guided bombs can also track onboard laser production
