Memetics is a newly - emerged theory aiming to explain the evolutionary mechanisms of culture from the perspective of Darwinism. Memet- ics reveals the law of language replication and transmission ; it provides a new perspective for the language research. Meme, as a unit of cultural informa- tion, is transmitted through imitation and replication. Its replication and transmission provides an effective way to enrich cyber catchwords. This paper, based on the concepts of Memetics, through an examination of memetic phenomena within the realm of cyber catchwords by taking advantage of two means of memetic transmission, i. e. , geno - type and pheno - type, and an interpretation of the causes and conditions of successful memes in popular net - speak, tries to provide some hints and references for the creation of strong and successful memes in the highly dynamic cyber catchwords.
