Byssinosis一词由Proust于1877年提出,在我国近年的教科书、译文或辞典中,把它译成“棉屑沉着病”、“棉尘沉着症”、“棉尘肺”等名称。译名所以不统一,主要是对此病的临床、病理和发病机制认识不够所造成。 1982年世界卫生组织总部在日内瓦有关“有机粉尘职业接触限值的研究组会议”上综合了世界上近30年来有关棉尘等有机粉尘危害的文章165篇,并提出了棉花等粉尘职业接触限值的建议,写成了工作报告。在报告中对近年的文献和研究进展作了如下概括:
