诚、信两字,都有诚实不欺之义,可以互训。二者的区别在于,“信”略重于处理人际关系的践履一面;“诚”则着眼于反身自成的人性实现和人的本真存在之完成一面。在“诚信”这一概念中,二者表现出一种诚中形外、内外一体的整体意义结构。忠信或诚乃是人成就其德性的途径和根据。人际交往中的讲信用、重然诺、诚实无欺,必建基于人的真实的德性成就和存在的完成,才能实现其作为“诚信”的本真意义。儒家对“诚信”的这种理解,体现了一种道义至上的伦理原则。儒家的“诚信”论强调的是道德的自身价值和自身目的,而拒斥对道德行为之外在功利目的性的理解。今日中国社会要重建诚信道德,宜去除政治意识形态私见,注重唤醒人心内在的天德良知,由此逐渐在整个社会挺立起道义至上的至善价值原则,此其所以端本正源、深根固柢之道。

Confucianism’s “honesty” emphasizes moral self-worth and self-purpose, while rejecting the understanding of utilitarian purpose beyond moral behavior. Today, in order to rebuild honesty and honesty in the Chinese society, we should remove the private opinion of political ideology and pay attention to awakening the inner virtues of morality so as to gradually establish the principle of the supreme value of morality in the entire society.
