[Author introduced] Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), American novelist, winner of Nobel Prize for literature. He was born in a doctor’s family and he became a trainee reporter after graduating from high school. After World War I broke out, volunteers who had volunteered to go to Italy as combat ambulances were seriously injured on the front lines. During the Spanish Civil War, he visited the front line three times as a reporter and supported the Spanish people in a just struggle. He visited China in 1941 to support China’s War of Resistance Against Japan. Then he went back to Europe as a war correspondent. After World War II, he moved to Cuba and devoted himself to writing. Because of many old injuries and illnesses, he committed suicide with shotguns in the United States in 1961. Hemingway traveled for many years and contacted many people with strong character. In his works, he created many characters with “tough guys”. The old fisherman San Diego in The Old Man and the Sea is a representative.
