It has been reported that protease inhibitors such as pepstatin, chymotrypsin and leupeptin inhibit the entry of Plasmodium knowlesi into the erythrocytes. The authors have demonstrated that serums from the onset of cerebral malaria patients have a high Plasmodium growth inhibitory activity. This article further studies the relationship between the levels of serum protease inhibitors in malaria patients and the inhibition of growth of Plasmodium falciparum in vitro.
