The list of the world’s top 20 container ports was announced in 1996. One of the most notable changes in the list is the disappearance of Bremen (including Bremerhaven, the same below) from the list, while its main competitor, Hamburg, ranks 6th. From the comparison of the historical data of the throughputs, annual growth rates and rankings of Bremerhaven and Hamburg ports from 1978 to 1996, we can see that the container throughput and rankings of Bremen and Hamburg ports were very close in 1978, The throughput of the latter finally ranked No. 6; while the throughput of Bremen rose slightly, but not as fast as that of Hamburg, and its ranking slipped gradually and finally disappeared from the list of 20 major ports in 1996.
