When General Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. Armed Forces, inspected the garrison of the Gulf, he drove straight to the office of the Pentagon and the Secretary of Defense and asked him for a troop surge. The two then rushed to the White House to brief President Bush for a duration of two and a half hours, so Bush decided to continue sending 100,000 additional troops to the Gulf. However, at the same time as the United States disclosed this inside story, it commented that Bush has allied himself to the 300,000 U.S. troops stationed in the Gulf with his political future and the prestige of the United States in the world. This is by no means a trick. Thirty thousand troops are not “a bunch of firewood that you can move around casually.”
