The ancients said: “We will not read books on the 3rd day, so that we can find words that are odorless, and their faces can be ignored.” This saying seems serious. However, when I think about it carefully, I feel very reasonable. A person who likes to read books, if he hasn’t approached the book for a long time, must be because he is busy or because his mind is scattered on other trivial matters, leaving him with no time or mood. The busyness of these trivial life projects is the biggest cause of one’s superficial ideas. When the idea is shallow and vulgar, the speech is naturally odorless, and the face must be detestable. Although we can’t survive without reality, taking a small part of each day to read a book can make us keep our minds clear and flexible. In ancient poetry there are “ask canal that clear, as the source of active water.” Our thoughts need a source of living water, and a large part of this source of living water comes from reading. Reading useful books every day has a nourishing effect on the spirit, and our words and deeds will not be “tasteless” and “absurd”.
