美术教育是人类重要的文化教育活动,是学校艺术教育重要的组成部分。通过美术教育,顺应学生身心发展规律,保证学生身心健康,培养学生的道德意识、审美情趣、认知能力、意志品质等。唐代画论家张彦远就有“夫画者,成教化,助人伦,画神变,则幽微,与六籍同功,四时并运”的著名论断。这充分表明古人已认识到绘画对人的发展存在着很大的影响。学校开展美术教育课,是以教育为手段,向学生传授一定的美术知识和培养必要的技能,发扬和传播美术文化,以美术为中介,培养学生的道德情操和审美能力发展智力和创造力,获取一般教育意义的功效。
