Following electroacupuncture at Baihui (DU 20) and Dazhui (DU 14) in a rat model of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion, extracellular-signal-regulated kinase expression in cerebral cortex and corpusstriatum, serum glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase activity, and serum glutathionecontent were elevated, and neurobehavioral scores improved. However, these effects were antagonized by mitogen-activated protein kinase inhibitor PD98059. Results indicated that electroacupuncturereversed free radical chain reactions and oxidative stress injury caused by cerebralischemia/reperfusion, thereby providing neuroprotection. This process could correlate with the mitogen-activated protein kinase signal transduction pathway.
