I. Overview The most important factor in obtaining the required characteristics of traction motor bearings is the finish of the journal. Machined micro-roughness spikes (called projections) on the journal surface can penetrate the oil film and cause bearing damage and failure. Experience has shown that only rolling can produce a surface that allows reliable bearing operation. Figure 1 shows a typical axle spindle surface. This manual explains how to measure the surface finish, make the surface finish pattern, and make a good journal finish. Other factors that affect the performance of the bearing, such as the use of suitable lubricants and wicks, and recommended repair schedules, are described in other documents.
