The US footwear market price rose and fell. In 1997, the retail sales of the US shoe market was US$36.3 billion, up 2.8% from US$35.3 billion in 1996. If measured in terms of sales volume, the total sales volume in 1997 was 1.0579 billion pairs. Compared with 1,065,100 million pairs in 1996, it decreased by 0.7%. Low-priced shoes are fiercely competitive. In 1997, the average US shoe price was US$34.3 per pair.
