Following generations of custom benchtop instrumentation, advances in technology continue to move toward more flexible, software controlled, and smaller instrumentation. However, reducing power consumption to achieve noise and measurement accuracy remains a challenge. Mobility is a factor in abandoning desktop instrumentation. Large systems based on customization and rack have limitations from a logistics point of view. Splitting the cabinet / desktop into smaller nodes allows for custom configuration and optimization of instrumentation for the environment and size of the test site or object.
