The DNA content has a linear relationship with the ploidy number. Analysis of cellular DNA content by flow cytometry (FCM) may provide a useful information for the prognosis of prostate cancer. The authors selected 80 patients with pathologically proven prostate cancer to undergo FCM and evaluated the relationship between DNA content and tumor stage, grade, and patient survival. These patients were treated with LHRH analogues or in combination with methyl progesterone and histologically graded according to the Mostofi method. Follow-up was 54 to 102 months. The survival curve was marked by the Kaplan-Meier method. 80 patients underwent ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy through the perineum; specimens were given RPMI 1640 medium containing 5% fetal bovine serum.
