Zhejiang’s knitting industry began with the hosiery industry. According to historical records, in the 18th century during the Jiaqing period of the reign of Qing Emperor Qianlong, Hangzhou had already hand-knit socks. The hosiery industry that was formed in the early days was mostly distributed in coastal towns and inland areas of Zhejiang. During the reign of Qing Emperor Guangxu, the “Xinlong Knitting Workshop” was established in Wuma Street of Wenzhou City; in 1905, “Chengyi Socks Factory” was established in Jinhua County; in 1909, “Chonglong Socks Factory” and Haining Zhenxing Socks Factory were established in Hangzhou and Pinghu in 1912. The “Guanghua socks factory” is the pioneer in the use of hand-socks in the province.
