中国近代小说承担了艰巨的任务,而它也在域外小说和古典传统的双重约束和影响之下,开始了自身的现代化转型。从内容到形式,从技法到语言,近代小说都经历了根本的演变和更迭。而由于近代报章的发达,报章小说开始在近代小说中崭露头角。这些演进和转型不仅改变了小说的形态,也改变了人们的生活和思维观念。然而,这些变化却也带来了一些意料不到的弊端:即,美与美感的逐渐遗失。五四作家们看到了近代小说的这些问题,因而五四及其以后的小说创作,逐渐走上了关注社会和审美相结合的道路———而美与美感也就在这遗失与寻觅之间或隐或显、忽明忽暗。
Modern Chinese novels took on a daunting task, and under the dual constraints and influence of extraterritorial fiction and classical tradition, it started its own transformation of modernization. From content to form, from technique to language, modern novels have undergone fundamental evolution and change.
