The improved plan for the Hawke’s surface-to-air missile system, led by the U.S. Army, has been approved by the U.S. Department of Defense’s agency responsible for the project. Participating in the plan are the Army, Marine Corps and NATO. The United States Army has designated the plan as “CORPS-SAM” to replace the “third-stage” Hawk missile system in order to combat threats beyond the year 2000. At present, the United States Marine Corps is still studying and formulating a similar MSAM (medium-range surface-to-air missile) development plan. According to Dodt, the Marine Corps lieutenant responsible for the MSAM program, CORP SAM and MSAM will be merged within weeks after the Army and Navy units signed the memorandum.
