Preface The work described in this article is a selection of research papers funded by the Diecasting Research Foundation. The study, conducted mainly at Case Western Reserve University, includes useful information from a similar study by Ud-deholm Corporation and is complemented by and co-authored with other colleagues of the Foundation’s Die & Mold Material Council 01 The content of the report. This article includes a synopsis of the first two phases of a three-phase research project. Its purpose is to obtain accurate data on quench rates, microstructure and properties of H13 hot die steel for die casting. Using these technologies and materials, heat treating workers will be able to predict the microstructure and impact properties of modules of various sizes after cooling with different quenching methods.
