OBJECTIVE: To observe the time and performance of establishing coronary collateral vessels after occlusion of left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) in dogs and to explore the effects of collateral vessels on left ventricular function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight crossbred dogs were thoracotomy lined with LAD, and coronary arteries and left ventriculography were performed regularly within 1 day to 1 year after ligation of LAD. Results: One week after ligation of LAD, angiography began to show the formation of collateral vessels. In 1-3 months after ligation of LAD, all of the collateral vessels with varying degrees were found and left ventricular function improved significantly. Conclusion: The canine coronary artery is rich in collateral vessels. The establishment of collateral vessels contributes to the recovery of left ventricular systolic function.
