General Development The general trend of the upswing of man-made fibers in Western Europe in 1979 was reversed in the first quarter of 1980 due to the decline of the industrial and commercial sector. Industrial production has been greatly reduced. The textile and apparel industry was also hit by the decline of the industrial and commercial sectors. It is estimated that the production of the textile industry in the countries of the Western European Community is 2% lower than in 1979. The situation in the United Kingdom was the worst (decreased by 12%), while Italy was better (increased by 4%).
