This article discusses the anatomy and physiology of the eustachian tube as well as its importance in flight, and discusses issues related to ear pressure trauma. [Eustachian tube physiology] Eustachian tube’s primary role is to make it through the tympanum with the outside world traffic in order to maintain the tympanic membrane pressure balance. Under static conditions, the eustachian tube is closed, which is formed by a variety of factors, such as its support cartilage elasticity, venous pressure and lumen surface mucus layer and so on. These factors have not yet been fully elucidated in the literature, but some relevant findings have been made. For example, Perlman (1967) has demonstrated that there is a reasonably small pressure difference across the eustachian tube for compartmentalization of the lumen (in contact with each other)
