安徒生《海的女儿》拥有复杂的伦理内涵，并非一般意义上的浪漫主义作品。小人鱼求爱失败的经历表明，人类恋爱不能以失去人格和自我为代价，人类活动不能违背自然法则和生态规律。而小人鱼最终获得拯救则表明人类只有抛弃狭隘的利己主义计较，怀着爱心和善意不断追求，才能实现生命意义和人生境界的升华。
