气球的发展气球不带推进器,不能自由控制方向,只能随风飘飞,但是垂直方向的升降可以操纵。要使气球上升,可以从吊篮中抛掉压载沙袋,使气球载重减轻;要下降,则可将它上面的专用活门打开,放出一些气体,使浮力减小。在气球内充以氢气或氮气的是冷气球,充以热空气的就是热气球。现代热气球可以通过控制喷入的火焰大小来操纵升降。自由气球可以用于体育运动、跳伞训练、气象观测和探空等科学研究。气球在战争中,也曾充当作战的工具。
