Cadillac cars used to measure the amount of water on the windshield and automatically adjust the wiper rain smart system accordingly. When it starts to rain or snow, the rain-sensitive system activates the wiper and automatically adjusts the wiper interval based on the amount of water. When it rains, the speed of the digester slows down first and then when the precipitation stops, the digester no longer moves. The rain-sensitive system is standard equipment for the 1996 Cadillac DeVille, Concours, Seville and Eldorado. At the heart of the rain-sensitive system is a small module housed in the front glass and behind the rear-view mirror. A row of eight tiny light-emitting diodes emit infrared light, diagonally across the glass. If the front glass is dry, the infrared light is reflected back from the outer glass surface and received by the 8 detectors on the other side of the module. If there is water on the glass, the glass surface does not accurately reflect the light beam and the module detects rain or snow on the outside. It is one thing to detect that there is water on the windshield, and it is quite another to measure the amount of water accurately to regulate the water.
