建队渊源__作为英格兰足球的重心,曼彻斯特市的足球发展史堪称整个英格兰足球发展的缩影、曼彻斯特德比也是英格兰足球史上最著名的德比之一。曼联队的传奇开始于1878年,兰开夏和约克夏铁路公司(Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company)客货车工厂的雇员请求他们的雇主许可和赞助他们建立一支足球队,请求得到应允,于是牛顿希思 LYR 队成立了,这就是曼联的前身。曼城俱乐部的成立则足足比曼联晚了九年,1887年才宣告成立,从此就开始了和曼联队长达100多年的对抗。
