The Silk-Road is the contemporary name for a complex of overland and maritime trade routes linking East Asia with the Mediterranean world in Ancient times and its name coming from one of the traded items:Chinese silk.The popularity of’Silk Road Studies’ is reflected by the growing number of studies devoted to this topic and many of them have specifically commented on the role that the Nilotic cities and the harbours on the Red Sea coast played in this intational trade connecting Roman Egypt with Arabia,India and (indirectly) China).1 In the present monograph,through the explorations of the harbour port of Berenike on the Red Sea,S.E.Sidebotham presents a vivid picture of this hub which linked the Roman Empire to the Far East,while exploring,at the same time,the role that it played in the regional and local economies of Egypt during a period of eight centuries.
