古代岭南与中原地区山川阻隔,经济开发较晚,唐宋以前一直被中原人士视为「化外之域」。但她以地产奇珍异宝而著称,且其政治、经济、文化中心——广州又是当时海外贸易的中心,异国珍宝源源不断地汇集于此。珍珠、珊瑚、香料、象牙、犀角、琉璃、玛(?)、翡翠等宝物给内地官僚、商贾以极大的诱惑力。求富的欲望使他们欣然前往岭南务利。本来,商贾前来与外国商人或岭南本地商人平等市易,乃无可非议;但,来岭南任职的官吏则多把岭南视为聚敛私人财富之地,搜刮珍宝而归。其贪污、中饱私囊的手段之一就是垄断当时的海外贸易。

One of the instruments of corruption and gaining personal gain was to monopolize the then overseas trade.
