南极西部裂谷区是地球上最大的陆壳扩展地区之一,其面积与美国西部盆-山区(Basin and Range)及东非裂谷区相当(Behrendt等,1991;tessensohm和Worner,1991).南极西部裂谷体系是南极两个主要构造区之一,另一个是南极东部克拉通地区(图1).南极西部裂谷体系与相对稳定的东部克拉通地区不同,它最近100 Ma的构造史非常复杂,这使得对其的重建工作十分困难(Cande 等,2000),在该裂谷体系的北部边缘是玛丽·伯德地隆起,这是一个面积与黄石(Yellowstone)热点相仿、自30 Ma以来火山作用强烈的板内地区(Hole和LeMasurier,1994).最近我们研究南极西部历史和地壳构造主要依据在罗斯海采集的地球物理数据,这些数据揭示了减薄地壳范围内许多以断层为界的盆地,该减薄地壳在南极西部裂谷体系罗斯海地段的平均厚度为25 km.然而,由于裂谷的岸上部分几乎被南极西部冰盖和罗斯冰架严密封盖,岸上地质勘探只局限于表面不足2%的未遮盖区.
