作为小说的重要主题之一,宗教的幻灭在鲍德温的《另一个国家》中得到了圆熟而恰切的展现。作品中,作者已不再囿于早期创作中对宗教传统的矛盾心理,而是通过饱受歧视、欺凌和侮辱的主人公们丰富的生活和心理历程,用纸笔演绎了一首决绝和反叛的幻灭交响诗,这乐音虽时隐时现,且未必具纯粹的反宗教意味,但当命运的魔掌戕害着人们的身心,而宗教充当助纣为虐的精神桎梏和欺骗手段时,这幻灭的复调主题就发出了它在作品中的最强音。本文拟就作者的个人创作背景的影响、象征手法的运用、人物心理和行为表征等小说创作的重要因素,评述这一幻灭主题的在作品中的表现。
