日本奈良室生寺金堂(即正殿)舟形或莲瓣形背光,是彩绘板背光的杰作。其背光表面以多种矿物质颜料绘制化佛和植物图案。其中,中尊释迦如来佛彩绘背光图案最为精美。室生寺背光分色系退晕和把白线作为退晕轮廓的手法,是中国隋唐五代时期石窟壁画装饰图案中常见的表现方法。从中可以看出,日本室生寺金堂彩绘背光图案,与中国伯孜克里克石窟、敦煌莫高窟等壁画背光图案的清晰传承关系。
