In frequency agile radars, solid-state voltage-controlled oscillators can replace the klystrons for local oscillation. The Gann device referred to here is a typical design that improves the klystron device in terms of both functional and physical properties. Many frequency agile radar receivers still use klystrons as local oscillators. Although a klystron is a simple device with good power output and tuning linearity, its life is relatively short and must be changed frequently. Replacing the klystron with a solid state VCO eliminates these drawbacks. Solid-state voltage-controlled oscillators can be designed with a rare form factor. For example, Figure (1) shows a voltage controlled oscillator consisting of a Gannon tube shaped to fit where it was previously occupied by an X-band speed-modulated oscillator on a B-52 radar.
