Proverbs which are known as “custom fossil” are formed during a long course of language application. With the more frequent communication between the English people and the Chinese people, there is a great demand for more research on English and Chinese proverbs. The paper analyses the different classifications and characteristics of proverbs and explore the cultural differences that trigger misunderstandings and errors of proverb translation before offering several translating methods in proverb translation. The aim of the paper is to help language learners to enhance the effectiveness of cross-cultural communication.
