For the first time, large mammalian fossils found near Varzeghan, northwestern Iran, were reported, including three-eared horses and horrors. According to the individual size and morphological characteristics, the three-toed horses were temporarily divided into a small to medium-sized species like Hipparion moldavicum and a medium-large species resembling H. prostylum or H. dietrichi. Deinotherium giganteum also appeared in this area. Based on a comparison with mammalian fossils from other late Miocene locations, the age of these new fossil sites is presumed to be the MN12 of Turolian mid-term or equivalent to European mammalian bands.
