It has been proven for a long time that the use of stainless steel cathode plates and electrolytic refining of cathode copper is a reliable technique. Mount Isa Mines Ltd. is the creator of this technology. Experience has shown that these cathodes can last more than fifteen years in electrolytic refining and up to ten years in electrowinning. Proper management of the production system and attention to detail will ensure the life of the electrode in both applications. Electrolyte chloride content, current density, stripping mode, current distribution, copper out of the way and the cathode cycle will affect the life of the cathode plate. This paper aims to discuss the common problems encountered in cathodic management, with special emphasis on the problems encountered in electrowinning refineries. These recommendations are based primarily on experimental work performed by the Electrolytes electrolysis team and on the basis of experience and knowledge gained from working with clients.
