This article presents a new method for evaluating primary carbide volume fraction in tool steels. The method utilizes electrolytic extraction of carbides followed by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray powder diffraction analysis of the carbides. By comparing the chemical composition of a certain kind of carbide with the total carbide content, the weight fractions of various kinds of magnetized materials are obtained; and the volume fraction thereof can be obtained from the calculated theoretical density of carbide.
