常璩,字道将,蜀郡江原县小亭乡(四川崇庆县三江镇)人。生于西晋惠帝初,卒于东晋穆帝末年。常氏是江原的大姓,自蜀汉到两晋就出了不少达官贵人,如常播、常励、常赛、常宽、常洛等,他们有的是各朝政府官吏,有的是一代名儒,有的是历史学家。其中常宽不仅精通《毛诗》、《春秋》、《三礼》、《易》等儒家经典,而且还写有《蜀后志》、《续益部耆旧传》等,这都是当时名著。这些文化熏陶对常璩献身学术产生了很大影响。
