Example 1 If 20 grams of a certain kind of iron oxide, 14 grams of pure iron can be obtained after being completely reduced by carbon monoxide. The chemical formula of this oxide was presumed by calculation. Solution 1: Set the chemical formula of the oxide to Fe_aO_b. From (aFe)/(Fe_aO_b)=14g/20g, with (56a)/(56a+16b)=14g/20g, a/b=2/3. Solution 2: Set the chemical formula of the oxide to Fe_aO_b. Because iron oxide 20 grams, completely reduced by CO obtained pure iron 14 grams (that is, the mass of iron in the oxide 14 grams). The oxygen content of the oxide is 20g-14g = 6
