元明时期嘉湖地区的河网分化非常明显,四面运河的封闭使水流保持相对平衡。围田的发展使水面破碎化。随着河网增多,圩田进一步变小,桑基农业大量出现。在河网发育的基础上,低地地区出现了江南的市镇走廊。市镇激活物流,推动了植桑的发展,并使市镇附近的旱地升值。桑基农业或桑基鱼塘与市镇经济相联系,生态系统的持续能力大大提高,支持了明清时期江南的繁荣。
